How the numbers are worked out

No hidden assumptions.

  • Engineer-hours reclaimed per week equals your number of services or teams, times the toil hours per team per week, times the share of toil you expect self-service to remove. The share is your own estimate, not ours.
  • Onboarding time saved per new service equals your days to onboard today minus the target you expect to reach. If your target is higher than today, the saving shows as zero.
  • Annual cost of current toil equals total toil hours per year (services times weekly hours times 48 working weeks) times your loaded hourly cost.
  • Reclaimable per year applies your removable share to that annual cost.
  • Hourly cost is your annual loaded cost divided by about 1,920 working hours a year (48 weeks at 40 hours). We use 48 weeks to allow for leave and holidays.

That is the whole model. It is deliberately transparent so you can sanity-check it and lower any figure that feels generous. Real results depend on your workflows, how much you actually move to self-service, and how your team adopts it.
